Money
Think ahead about how much money you're going to need - and how you're going to access it. Do you need to buy traveller's cheques? Organise a different type of credit card? Buy some local currency? Allow yourself plenty of time to find out what method is going to be the best for you once you head off on your journey.
Also, if you do take credit cards with you, make sure you keep them secure at all times, and take the emergency number you need to contact if the card gets stolen in 2 or 3 different places, including with someone back home.
For traveller's cheques, keep a note of all the cheque numbers and again, carry it in at least 2 separate places while you travel and leave a record with someone at home.
Chances are you're never going to need to worry about this sort of thing, but if you're the victim of theft, you'll be really glad you were prepared.
